The SAM Soccer Euro team recently returned from a 7-day trip to England. The team played games, trained and visited various cultural landmarks across the country. The team (pictured here) was compromised of boys from 9 different clubs and coached by SAM SELECT Program Manager, Gary Burke.
During the trip the team played a total of 3 games against local clubs and participated in one training session with Newcastle United foundation coaches. Our SAM team was still shaking off their travel legs in the first game against Wigan Lactics and fell 2-1. In the game versus the Unsworth Raiders, SAM was up 2-0, but unfortunately the home team came storming back to win 3-2. In the final game SAM had found their footing and beat the home team, Radcliffe Borough 5-1.
The SAM team attended the Hull City versus Newcastle United game, sitting pitch side. The group explored English soccer staples such as Old Trafford, St James Park and traveled around historic Manchester, a city oozing with soccer history. The group also toured the Liverpool museum, and saw the stadiums for Everton and Liverpool. Though the trip was busy, parents of the boys noted how much the players said they had both on and off the field and that “it was a trip they will never forget!”
Gary Burke said of the trip, “For SAM to work with Worldstrides, and be able to provide this opportunity is a special thing. We at SAM are so glad that we could offer continued personal growth both on and off the field to the players within our league. The players represented themselves extremely well and bonded together to play great soccer, while making life long memories. I am honored and proud to have coached them.”
